Know the Signs

Common Dental Emergencies

Severe Toothache

Persistent, throbbing pain that doesn't respond to over-the-counter medication may indicate infection or abscess.

First aid: Rinse with warm salt water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Avoid aspirin directly on the tooth.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

A fracture can expose the nerve and lead to infection if not treated promptly.

First aid: Rinse gently with warm water. Apply a cold compress. Save any broken pieces and bring them to your appointment.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical — the best chance of saving a knocked-out tooth is within 30 minutes.

First aid: Handle the tooth by the crown only. Gently rinse without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket, or store in milk. Call us immediately.

Lost Filling or Crown

An exposed tooth is vulnerable to sensitivity, further damage, and infection.

First aid: Apply dental cement or sugar-free gum as a temporary cover. Avoid chewing on that side. See us as soon as possible.

Dental Abscess

A painful, pus-filled infection at the root of a tooth or in the gums that requires immediate treatment.

First aid: Rinse with mild salt water several times daily. Do not pop or drain the abscess. Seek treatment immediately — abscesses can become serious.

Uncontrolled Bleeding

Persistent bleeding after an extraction, injury, or from the gums that won't stop with pressure.

First aid: Apply firm pressure with clean gauze. If bleeding doesn't stop within 15-20 minutes, call us or go to the emergency room.
